About the Arabic Saudi Arabian Hijazi

Of the three major dialects in Saudi Arabic - Hijazi, Najidi, and Shargi - Hijazi is used throughout the country for the government and commercial purposes, and has become the most widely understood dialect in the Arabian peninsula. Even so, there is no 'standard' Hijazi dialect, but the basis for the Saudi Arabic basic course is 'urban' Hijazi, to distinguish it from the bedouin dialects also native to the region. The aim of the course is 'working' proficiency in the language. The course enables you to speak and understand Saudi Arabic speech at a normal rate in a variety of social and business contexts.

This course was designed for use by diplomats, business people and serious language students. Upon completion of this course the student should have attained a working proficiency in the language. Students will be able to satisfy routine social and business requirements, be able to carry on conversations regarding a wide range of topics, and comprehend speech at a normal rate of speed.

About the Arabic Saudi Arabian Hijazi Language

Arabic is a Semitic language, fairly closely related to, for instance, the Hebrew language and the Aramaic language, spoken throughout the Arab world and widely known outside it. It has been a literary language for over 1500 years, and is the liturgical language of Islam.

The expression "Arabic" may refer either to literary Arabic or to the many spoken varieties of Arabic; Arabs tend to view the latter as dialects of the former, and consider literary Arabic as the standard language.

Saudi Arabia is home to a number of different Arab groups. The Hijazi Arab (more commonly known as the Saudi Arab) form the majority of the Saudi Arabian population and live predominantly along the Red Sea coast and in the major urban areas. They speak a language called Arabiya, or, as it is more commonly called, Hijazi Arabic.

The Arab culture was developed by tribes of nomads and villagers who lived in the Arabian Desert. From there, Arab migrations spread throughout the Middle East and northern Africa, leading to the expansion of the Arab world.

More than half the area of Saudi Arabia is desert. Fertile oases, many of which are the sites of towns and villages, are scattered through the Saudi Arabian deserts north of Rub' al Khali. Larger tracts of grassland can be found in Ad Dhana' and the plateau region. The great Saudi Arabian oil fields are located in the coastal area adjoining the Persian Gulf.
